I thought this would be quite a cool thing to do both for the blog and for youtube. I love the old VW beetle. I remember going to my great Aunts house when I was growing up and her sons yellow beetle was sitting on the driveway (he had emigrated to Australia but left the car there). I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I made the Tamiya model about 25 years ago so I thought I would get a new one to make. But times have changed and there are a few companies who have produced models in 1:24 scale. There are some reviews out there but I think the best thing to do is get one of each, put them side by side and see where we go from there.
So here I’m going to review 7 of the most popular and readily available Volkswagen Beetle Scale Model Kits. A Full review video comparing each kit and lots of high-quality photos of all the sprues and parts.
I’m only going to go for the saloon model, not the cabriolet and not the police version. From what I can find there are 5 main kits and 12 kit that seems to be a little less common.
- TAMIYA 24136 Volkswagen 1300 Beetle 1:24 Car Model Kit
- Italeri 1/24 VW1303S Beetle # 3708
- Aoshima 05552 – 1/24 VOLKSWAGEN 1303S Beetle 1303S ’73
- Hasegawa 1/24 Volkswagen Beetle 1967
- Revell 1:24 VW Beetle Limousine 1968
- Imai 1:24 Basic Car Series Volkswagen 1303s Beetle
- Gunze Sangyo 1:24 G149:900. 1956 VW Beetle
So here I will have 6 models to play with. Rather than just paint each one standard showroom condition. What I would like to do is paint them as the following.
- Brand New Showroom Condition
- Herbie The Love Bug
- Rusted Over And Forgotten About
- Ratty Surfer Car
- I’m Thinking Mexican Mexico City Taxi
- ?????
- ?????
This should be a nice little project that should last the summer months. There is a lot of research to do I already have a couple of folders on google images I’m adding pictures to.
Below are some High Definition Photos of all ao the VW Beetle Models featured in the video.
